Uglies

Uglies is the first in a series of 4, which include Uglies, Pretties, Special, and Extras. Those reviews will be added at the end. :)

Uglies is the story of Tally Youngblood, a 15 year old in the future. In this time, when you turn 16, you get an operation that makes you beautiful. Tally can't wait to be Pretty like her friend Peris. Then, she meets a girl named Shay, who doesn't want to be Pretty.

When Shay runs away, Tally thinks she'll get over it- until she is confronted by Specials. Specials were thought to be Ugly legends, until Tally meets one. They are ruthless, cruel, and won't let Tally turn Pretty until she returns Shay to the city.

The problem is, Shay is in a strange city that isn't even a city at all, across a desert ravaged by a fantastic weed. Mysterious ruins, a government conspiracy, and the shocking story of the Rusties, the humans that live in the 2000's, and how they die.

When Tally does find Shay, she falls in love with someone close to her. When Specials come, will that all dissapear?

5/5 for very good! For ages 11+

Pretties!!! Tally Youngblood and Shay are back, and have been turned Pretty against their will. They now have the brain problems that the government has issued to keep rebels under control. Now Shay and Tally are perpetually happy and clueless- until a daring Ugly returns to give Tally pills to destroy the tumor on her brain.

It's all good- Tally is beautiful and smart- until Shay finds out her secret. Shay becomes enraged, and discovers her own way to destroy the tumor- cutting.

When Tally and her boyfriend Zane are put on "probation," and given tracking bracelets, will a bunch of Pretties be able to make an escape attempt? Especially with the changes Shay has gone through... 4/5 12+ because of self-mutilation

Specials!!! Now Tally and Shay are united again, emo, super strong, fast, and frighteningly beautiful. They are assigned to go after the mysterious city "The Smoke" again. But "The Smoke" was destroyed- where could it be now?

War had allegedly ended with the Rusties- but now, the Specials are out to stop "The Smoke" and it's base city. There will be a tragic death, and the transformation of all but one of the Specials. 5/5 For mature 12+ for self-mutilation and mild language

Extras!!! It's been 3 years since the "mind rain," a.k.a. when the Specials were de-Specialized, and the Pretties were made smart again. Aya is just a normal 15 year old girl, until she meets a clique of girls who do crazy things, like surf on top of trains.

While trying to catch their exploits on tape and become famous, Aya stumbles across a plan to launch missles at cities and rule the world. After revealing this story, strange beings come after Aya, who is saved by two very Special visitors, the most famous people in the entire word.
3/5 for 11+

The Internet Girls*

*A series that includes Ttyl, Ttfn, and L8r, G8r

The Internet Girls is a series of Lauren Myracle, author of the thrilling horror Rhymes With Witches. This series is the first series of books ever to be written in instant messages.

ttyl- book 1

Barnes and Noble:

An epistolary novel for the 21st century, this sharp, funny, and true-to-life breakout hit about friendship is told entirely in instant messages. And Internet-savvy teens have fallen in love with flirty Angela (SnowAngel), moody Maddie (mad maddie), and good girl Zoe (zoegirl) and their frank perceptions about a tumultuous tenth-grade semester.

My review!!! This is the story told entirely in I.M. It's about three girls, Angela the Flirt a.k.a. SnowAngel, Madigan the Rebel (mad maddie), and Zoe the Good-Girl (zoegirl)

Angela falls head over heels for a guy, but he seems to be interested in a girl named Tonnie. However, she believes it's her story-book romance, and does nothing. Madigan and Zoe know it's not heading in the right direction, and warn her. She pays no heed. Then, she catches her guy on a date with Tonnie. He gives a pitiful excuse, saying she didn't know how to say no. Then, she goes over to his house, and Tonnie answers the door and tells her how stupid she's been.
Then she meets a new great guy who's into poetry. Her hopes soar when he invites her to a poetry thing...until she finds out that he has a girlfriend.
A bit more afraid to meet a guy that she's into, she becomes very sad- until she meets a boy named Doug, who is sweet, and likes her a lot.

Madigan, or just Maddie, is ever-critical of a girl named Jana, the popular girl that everyone either loves or hates. Jana always seems to know exactly what to do to annoy Maddie. Then, Maddie sees Jana at a 7-11. She actually seems nice to Maddie, and they have a normal conversation. Her other friends are very doubtful, because Maddie really hates Jana. Maddie claims she understands Jana now, and they do fun stuff together.
Then, one day, Maddie makes a joke at Jana's expense. Popular Jana isn't used to the sarcasm, and is very upset. She takes Maddie to a party, where Maddie gets drunk and dances on a table.
Out of revenge, Jana takes pictures of Maddie with her camera phone and forwards them to the whole school. Maddie is horrifically embarrassed and horrified that Jana betrayed her, and that everyone's seen her mistake. She's upset that she slipped up, and that everyone knows. She's also mad at her friends, because she figures out they kept a secret from her.

Zoe is a very good girl, and doesn't like language or wild parties and things like that. She's fine with being the good girl, but she wants this school year to be meaningful. She has a new english teacher, named Mr. H. He invites her to go to Church with him, and she, thinking primarily of politeness, agrees.
Time and time again, Mr. H pulls her aside and talking about religion and school and things like that. Her friends see the signs that Mr. H is bad news, even though she doesn't. Then, he invites her to come to his hot tub.
Zoe is terrified and doesn't know what to do. She's now realized that her teacher has feelings for her, and she does NOT like the idea. She is then saved by her friends, and the year is concluded nicely.

I LOVED this book! This is my favorite book of all time. It's creative, the VERY FIRST book written in I.M. And most people thought there were no firsts left! It's also a great friendship story. 5/5 definitely, though if english is not your main language, forget it.

Cn u read this u guys? plz?

If you didn't understand that, you will be lost. Otherwise, read this one.

This book is 13+ I think. 12 year olds, my apologies. There's a lot of language in this one.
13+ for language and drunkenness. Don't you guys worry about sexual content- this first one doesn't have any. Don't worry, I promise. Nothing ever happens between Angela and her boyfriends, and nothing ever happens between Mr. H and Zoe.

This book is also a 16- I think if you are under 16, you'll see the format as "poorly written." But seriously, if you are 13, you are mature enough to read this. Everyone has boyfriend trouble. Maddie made a mistake, we can learn from her mistake. And Zoe, as scary as it is, very bad things can happen to girls like her, though miraculously, in this book they don't.

This book was originally written not to have a sequel. You don't have to read the next 2. (though you should...even though they're a bit more mature.)

ttfn- book 2

Barnes and Noble:

Angela has just found out that her family is moving to El Cerrito, California, and she seriously doesn't know how she'll survive without her best friends. Maddie makes some really bad moves with Chive, a pot-smoking hipster who wants to be "friends with benefits." And Zoe finds herself falling for Doug, the sweet poet who has had a crush on Angela forever.

My review!!! Whee!!! ttfn is the sequel (though it was never supposed to be written) to ttyl, the breakout hit novel!!! I'll try to keep the details simpler...I may have spoiled Ttyl for those who have never read it. Oh well, guys. Read Ttyl anyway, it is worth it.

Zoe really likes a guy named Doug... the same guy who has a major crush on Angela. Angela has moved to California, and she never really seemed to like him anyway. So it's okay, right? Too bad Zoe didn't count on Angela moving back...

Angela has moved to California and become a loser! She doesn't have any friends except for a stalker named Glendy. Angela is too nice to tell Gendy to back off! Then she hears that Zoe has pounced on Doug after she left! Now Angela wants her old life back. But how?

Maddie hits on a boy at a party, and she really likes him. She wants to fit in with him so they can go out. But apparently, fitting in with Clive involves smoking pot. There are the good things- getting Clive. But then there's the fact that it's a drug and her parents have caught her.

I say 4/5, still creative, but the Maddie-smoking-pot thing is a little awkward.

I say this book is for 13-14+ because there is language and this time, there is drug use.

However, this book is worthy of a cuddle to those girls who have a cling-on that they are too nice to shake off- a loser that they wish would just go away.
It also has a moral, it presents a strong anti-smoking message.

l8r, g8r- book 3

Barnes and Noble:

Still at the center of the I.M. action are best buds, Angela, Zoe, and Maddie. Having survived three years of high school, the winsome threesome fully expect to rule the school, but they hadn't anticipated the evil buzz of queen bee Jana or the crazy hijinks at their senior prom.

Time for the review of....Karrrrrinnnnnnnnaaaa!

Maddie is all ready to go after Jana... she's had bad past with her. She thinks she really needs to teach Jana a lesson that she can't just toss people around, and maybe she is right.

Zoe is really in love with Doug, and she is contemplating the ultimate gesture of love... sleeping with him.

Angela has an amazing new boyfriend how showers her with gifts- gives her absolutely anything she wants, too bad she doesn't really love him. She's going to break up with him, until he gives her a jeep. A jeep! What's a girl supposed to do about that?

I love this one too, 5/5! It sums up the series perfectly, an amazing ending! It's a tab more mature than the rest, so I'm going to have to say 14+

There are drug references ("you druggie"), though nobody is actually on drugs in this one. There is discussion of sex, Zoe is considering it with her boyfriend of one year. There is drinking at the prom, and talk of revenge.

Ttyl is a must read for 13 year olds, Ttfn is a must read for mature 13 year olds or 14 year olds, and L8r G8r is good for mature 14 year olds or just plain old 14 year olds who can handle that sort of thing.

:) Sheesh, that took a long time.

Audrey, Wait!

Audrey, Wait! Is Robin Benway's first novel.
Breaking up with your boyfriend is hard, but wouldn't it be even harder if he wrote a famous song about what a jerk you were? That has happened to Audrey!

Barnes and Noble:

California high school student Audrey Cuttler dumps self-involved Evan, the lead singer of a little bad called The Do-Gooders. Evan writes, "Audrey, Wait!," a break-up song that's so good it rockets up the billboard charts. And Audrey is suddenly famous!
Now rabid fans are invading her school. People is running articles about her arm-warmers. The lead singer of the Lolitas wants her as his muse. (And the Internet is documenting her every move!) Audrey can't hang out with her best friend or get with her new crush without being mobbed by fans and paparazzi.
Take a wild ride with Audrey as she makes headlines, has outrageous amounts of fun, confronts her ex on MTV, and gets the chance to show the world who she really is.

My review!!! Audrey is just an ordinary girl when she breaks up with her musician boyfriend Evan. Later that night, he has an amazing song written about her, about how she dumped him! When she has rabid fans, is misquoted to look like a slut in magazines, and is caught on camera with a guy moving in on her! When her best friend organizes a reality show, and her new boyfriend James and her are followed on their date, she knows she has to do something. But what good will trash-talking on MTV do?

I loved this book! 4/5 for originality. I probably gave it a four of five on account of my friend was writing a similar story called The Girl In The Song when this came out.
I say this is 14-15+. I usually don't say things like this, but this book said the f-word over 80 times. Also, it describes Simon Lolita feeling up Audrey, and discusses Audrey's sexual relations to Evan. There is also drinking in this one. Sorry, 12-13 year old readers. I'm gonna have to say no.

So Yesterday

So Yesterday is written by Scott Westerfeld, bestselling author of the Uglies saga. It is basically about consumerism, and just like the Uglies saga, it is critical about our day-to-day lives.

Barnes and Noble:

Ever wonder who was the first kid to keep a wallet on a big chunky chain, or wear way-too-big pants on purpose? What about the mythical first guy who wore his baseball cap backwards? These are innovators, the people at the peak of the cool pyramid.
Seventeen year old Hunter Braque is a Trend setter, on the second level of the pyramid. His job: find the newest, coolest thing for the retail market. His MO: observe, don't get involved. But from the moment he meets Innovator Jen James, he can't help getting involved in a big way.
Part love story, part mystery, part stinging satire, Scott Westerfeld's spellbinding new novel will make you question everything you've ever believed about how to be cool.

Hunter is a "cool hunter." He searches the streets of New York for cool, original things to market to the public. Then, he meets Jen, an Innovator with exactly what he's looking for. Everything goes sour when his boss goes missing. Weird things are happening now. Bootleg shoes better than the original. Ads for products that don't exist. Products that dye skin purple! And a strange Japanese flashing light combination called paka-paka that gives kids brain difficulties.

Age 12+ I say! There are no sexual references, and it swears a little, but 12+
I say this is a 3/5. It is the worst book Scott Westerfeld has written, and even though it is good, I highly recommend his other books.

American Teen*

*this is a movie review. this website also does book reviews. for book reviews, check the archives

American Teen is a documentary about life during the senior year of high school. It takes place in 2006.

Megan, the typical popular girl, is facing trouble when her friends turn against her, and also because of a bad thing she did out of revenge.

Hannah is facing the problems of being forced to go to a college where she doesn't want to go, and being pulled away from her dreams in the process. Still tender after a breakup, she needs to get out of Indiana.

Jake is the stereotypical nerd, who has been plagued with a cheating girlfriend, however, he really likes her.

Colin is a basketball star who's rank seems to be slipping as he loses game after game. Will this make a difference when he needs a sports scholarship to get into his dream college?

Mitch is the school hearthrob. "Most girls would give their left...boob to go out with him." (Hannah Bailey) He's an athlete, and he's hot. When he falls for Hannah, the rebel, what will his friends think?

Rated PG-13 for strong language, sexual content, drinking and smoking

PG-13 is an accurate rating!!! for once, an accurate rating!!!

I give this a 2/5, just because I'm not one for documentaries. When I saw it, I didn't know it was a documentary until I got into the theater. If I was the kind of person to appreciate documentaries, it might have merited a 3/5. If you like documentaries, go see it. It's boring, but also a little bit funny at points.
